Both because these stories tend to suffer from excessive encyclopedia transcription and because the historical figure tends to sideline our beloved Watson. I remember reading a good essay once about how Watson is actually Doyle's greatest creation because demigod characters with extraordinary powers had long existed but Watson was the first example of a humanizing companion for such a figure.
